You don’t enjoy removing mildew. Who does? The removal of mildew is one of those chores which need to be done as soon as you notice mildew. Mildew problems always get worse if left untended.

Removing mildew is a simple task if you take care of it right away. Read on to learn how to tell mildew to get out and stay out.

What Causes Mildew and Why It’s a Problem

While mildew is slightly different than mold, they both depend on the same conditions to grow. That’s one of the reasons they are normally found growing together. Both mildew and mold require warmth, stagnant air, and moisture to thrive.

Common places to find mildew in the home include the bathroom (especially in and around the shower stall), the laundry room, and underneath sinks.

Mildew is gross. The black stains it leaves on your home surfaces are the least of the problems it causes, though. Mildew can also cause you to suffer serious allergy symptoms. It has been linked to everything from sneezing to depression.

Anybody’s health can be affected by mildew. Some people who are particularly likely to have their health affected include:

  • Young children
  • The elderly
  • Those with allergies
  • Those with respiratory problems
  • Those with compromised immune systems

Many of the Best Mold and Mildew Killers are Already in Your Cupboards

If you’re shopping for a commercial mold and mildew killer, there are scads to choose from. Most of the time, it isn’t necessary to spend extra money, though. Many of the best mold and mildew killers can be found right in your cupboards at home.

Bleach is widely accepted as the best mold and mildew cleaner. The EPA and CDC both recommend it for cleanup after a water disaster (i.e. flood, hurricane). One cup of bleach mixes into one gallon of water for the perfect mildew killing solution.

Bleach should not be used for porous surfaces (except white clothing and towels). If you are concerned about discoloration, test an inconspicuous area before using bleach to kill mold and mildew.

If you don’t want to use bleach, an equal mixture of water and vinegar is also highly effective. It can be used on porous or nonporous surfaces, and is nontoxic.

Making Sure Mildew Stays Out

The best way to keep mildew at bay is to fix the issues that allowed it to grow. Reduce mildew in your home by improving the air flow and reducing the moisture levels.

You can improve air flow by:

  • Installing and using fans
  • Opening windows and doors

You can reduce moisture by:

  • Hanging wet towels and clothes immediately
  • Wiping down shower stall and nearby walls immediately after use
  • Using a dehumidifier

Removing mildew isn’t difficult. A little elbow grease and materials most people have on hand will do the trick. The important thing is to take care of mildew while it’s still a small problem. Once you’ve removed the mildew, it’s also important to take care of the problems that allowed it to grow.
